¡Hey! Gracias a todos por leer nuestras entrevistas. Como es tradición, entrevistamos a usuarios de la comunidad internacional que han tenido contacto con la comunidad española. Las tres últimas veces hemos entrevistado a rusos, pero ahora le toca el turno a un usuario más cercano a la comunidad española: un amigo francés. Nos acompaña Étiolles, fandom star y administrador de la Wiki de El Señor de los Anillos. ¡Disfruten de la entrevista! Oh la la!
¡Hola a todos! ¡Ya es Navidad! Y como es tradición, entrevistamos a colegas internacionales para ampliar nuestra perspectiva respecto a las wikis. Apreciamos mucho a los extranjeros que se interesan por los proyectos hispanos y por eso les presento a Etiolles, administrador de TLOR Wiki en francés y aliado interwiki. Muchas gracias Etiolles por aceptar esta entrevista, empezando por la primera pregunta: ¿Cómo fueron tus inicios aquí en Fandom?
¡Hola! ¡Estoy muy contenta de estar aquí y poder compartir algo de mi experiencia! Empecé participando en debates en el área de discusiones de la wiki de El Señor de los Anillos en francés. Solo usaba mi teléfono y milagrosamente me nominaron moderador de discusiones. Digo milagrosamente porque era septiembre de 2021 y mi cuenta tenía solo unos meses y no sabía nada sobre El Señor de los Anillos o Fandom... ¡Fue muy agradable porque todas las personas que conocí fueron (y siguen siendo) absolutamente maravillosas y amables!
Un comienzo interesante, pues pasaste de chatear a editar, un proceso de la nueva generación de editores si se me permite decirlo. Imagino que durante tu tiempo en Fandom has conocido a varias personas ¿Quienes te han inspirado? ¿O de quién has aprendido durante tu tiempo en estos lugares?
Bueno, digamos que aprendí de mucha gente. No tengo un mentor como la mayoría de los usuarios, creo, pero me inspiro en todos y en cada posibilidad. Soy una persona muy sociable y no tengo miedo de hablar con todo el mundo. Aprendí de la administradora de mi wiki local, pero también de antiguos miembros de IVT e IWR, y de voluntarios de toda la red, pero también de miembros del personal, como Jpearson. Traté de trabajar mucho con ella y también aprendí mucho. Y trabajar y debatir con estrellas y miembros internacionales, como Taxcymus, también me hiciste aprender mucho.
Aww ¡Que genial recibir una mención tuya! He aprendido mucho de ti y he formado una amistad contigo, al final lo que nos une son las wikis pero también ser fans. Ahora pasando a otra pregunta que seguro genera mucha curiosidad, ¿de dónde viene tu apodo “Etiolles”?
De hecho, ser fanático y apasionado es muy importante y une a mucha gente. Para ser honesto con esa pregunta, es el nombre de mi ciudad natal en Francia, en el sureste de París. Nunca supe qué apodo elegir y hace unos siete años lo usé por primera vez y ahora tengo este apodo en todas partes, en todos los juegos y plataformas. Entonces, si ves un Étiolles o etiolles en algún lugar, bueno, probablemente sea yo.
Ahora estás poniendo el nombre de tu ciudad en alto, no solo París será famosa, ahora todos irán a visitar Etiolles para conocerte B) Siguiendo con la línea de "Fandom" y "wikis" ¿cuál es tu opinión sobre la situación actual de la comunidad internacional? Ha pasado un año desde la retirada del IWR, ahora que podemos ver los frutos de esta decisión, ¿qué has concluido de este cambio?
Diría primero que es un poco difícil ver las consecuencias, además de una sensación de abandono y falta de mantenimiento y apoyo para las wikis internacionales. Creo que esas son las consecuencias, según la observación. Pero pensándolo bien, no puedo culpar a Fandom Inc. por hacerlo porque tienen presupuestos que seguir. No estoy de acuerdo con las decisiones, pero desafortunadamente, ¡no depende de mí!
Habría sido mejor si nos lo hubieran dicho antes y nos hubieran ayudado a prepararnos, pero nos enteramos el mismo día que despidieron al grupo, lo que a mí (y estoy seguro que a todos los demás) no nos gustó.
Por lo que escucho de mis colegas internacionales, las comunidades internacionales nunca han estado tan inactivas y abandonadas. Es una pena y requiere mucho tiempo y energía hacer que una comunidad sea activa y dinámica, algo que yo no tengo. Esa es la razón principal por la que trato de apoyar a la Confederación Hispana, pero también por la que no empiezo a una Confederación Francesa.
No cabe duda de que ayudar a todo un bloque lingüístico es un compromiso difícil de asumir. Espero que la comunidad internacional sepa hacer estos cambios y que, después de un año de este incidente, podamos empezar a dar una opinión más acertada. Por otro lado, ya que mencionaste a la Confederación de Fandom Hispano, ¿tienes alguna opinión de la organización? Al menos de estos últimos meses tras la retirada del IWR.
¡Tengo una muy buena opinión de la Condeferation! La veo como una organización de usuarios involucrados que no quieren que su comunidad muera y es muy honorable. Lamentablemente, aún no tuve la oportunidad de ver cuán eficiente es para las wikis o la comunidad global, pero estoy seguro de que está ayudando a los administradores y usuarios, y a la comunidad a mantenerse unida.
Y una señal de su éxito es, en mi opinión, la creación de una Confederación Eslava y Lusófona. ¡Ojalá pudiera haber una Confederación Francesa, Italiana o Alemana para fortalecer realmente más a las comunidades y usuarios internacionales!
En estos tiempos, también deseo que las comunidades en el futuro puedan reorganizarse y convertirse en gremios de usuarios, porque al final, solo uniéndonos podemos formar un frente común, al menos, que permita un contacto más sólido. De hecho, te agradezco que seas la imagen de la comunidad francófona y que hayas aceptado actuar de cierta manera como su representante no oficial. Esto también ayuda a saber que la comunidad INT está dispuesta a dialogar, aunque sea solo parcialmente. Por otro lado, cambiemos un poco de tema, la gente quiere conocerte mejor. ¿Cuáles son tus aficiones?
Buena pregunta, tengo muchos hobbies. Uno de mis principales pasatiempos es leer, me encanta leer y aprender sobre todo lo que hay que saber. Soy el tipo de persona que pasa horas en Wikipedia leyendo artículos aleatorios pero muy interesantes. También me encanta la geopolítica, la historia, la geografía, las ciencias políticas, los idiomas, las ciencias sociales y mucho más. No soy un experto en ninguno de esos temas, pero puedo hablar un poco y seguir una discusión.
También me encanta el teatro y la interpretación, el tenis, el senderismo, el tiro con arco y ayudar a la gente. No sé si lo consideras un pasatiempo, pero también soy un católico practicante (a quien le encanta discutir sobre esto y sobre otras religiones, ¡todos tenemos que aprender más sobre los demás!)
Para resumir rápidamente, puedo hacer un montón de todo y nada, soy una persona extrovertida que siempre está sedienta de conocimiento y nuevas experiencias.
Hey, eso es maravilloso, creo que por eso nos llevamos bien. Además, eres un hombre bastante ilustrado, lo que no me sorprende viniendo de un francés, la cuna de la Ilustración, de hecho. Exploremos una de tus aficiones: la lectura. No es casualidad que seas administrador de la Wiki francesa de TLOR, edites wikis y te guste leer. ¿Qué obras literarias nos recomendarías o, en su defecto, qué es lo que más te gusta de TLOR?
Para hablar del universo de Tolkien, recomiendo muchísimo El Silmarillion, una especie de "Biblia" del universo. Me ayudó mucho a entender el universo en su conjunto y la mitología tanto como la historia o los personajes.
Por lo demás, me gustan muchos libros como las novelas de Star Wars, que devoro durante los veranos, o, más clásicos, la poesía y los cuentos clásicos. Recuerdo haber leído una gran obra de teatro escrita por Racine llamada Ifigenia. Está inspirada en la mitología griega durante la Guerra de Troya y la forma en que está escrita (Época clásica, siglo XVII, por lo que se utiliza el alejandrino y se siguen estrictamente las reglas del teatro clásico) hace que la obra sea aún mejor y hermosa!!!
Pero lo que más leo son libros documentales o periódicos especializados y si hay buenos aficionados a la geopolítica, la política o la diplomacia, les recomendaría la revista Foreign Affairs, ¡una revista muy interesante y profesional!
Recomendaciones que nuestro público seguramente seguirá. Ahora que hablamos de literatura, me imagino que en Navidad esperas recibir algo especial relacionado con tus pasiones, por eso te pregunto: Si pudieras pedirle algo (lo que fuere) a Santa Claus ¿qué sería?
Huh ¡Esa es una muy buena pregunta! No soy de las que pide muchos regalos para Navidad, normalmente no sé qué pedir y una vez que se pasa, recuerdo que quería eso. Lo que quiero no tiene nada que ver con el Fandom pero me gustaría conseguir una cámara. Porque viajo mucho y veo muchas cosas hermosas de todo el mundo y lo único que tengo para capturarlas es mi teléfono. Creo que se merecen más que eso y también siempre quise probar la fotografía!
¡Otra vez sin relación pero me gustaría conseguir un sombrero Stetson! Como viví en Missouri, EE.UU., durante un año, adopté el estilo vaquero con botas, mezclillas, cinturones, franelas y un sombrero de paja. Necesito tres cosas para completar mi colección: un revólver (viviendo en Francia, no va a pasar), un caballo (no tengo suficiente tiempo) ¡y un sombrero de fieltro de invierno! Así que pensé en conseguir un sombrero Stetson. Son bastante caros pero...¡Vale la pena si puedo conservarlo por el resto de mi vida!
Tanto que contar y narrar, qué preciado es tener una cámara para guardar momentos y además, tus regalos son representaciones de los momentos que has vivido. Mirando atrás este 2024, ¿cuáles son las lecciones que has sacado de este año? ¿Y qué esperas afrontar el próximo 2025?
Desde el punto de vista del Fandom, no aprendí grandes lecciones, pero trato de aprender de cada pequeña lección que pueda. Mi vida en el Fandom es bastante tranquila, nunca me meto en dramas ni controversias, y mi wiki de inicio tiene un número muy bajo de editores, por lo que nunca han ocurrido incidentes.
Pero ahora que lo pienso, escuché algunas historias sobre otros administradores que fueron degradados debido a algunos conflictos o cosas que ni siquiera hicieron, así que aprendí de eso a ser muy precavido y a sopesar cada decisión o elección que tomamos como administradores, es realmente importante porque puede tener un impacto negativo en la comunidad, pero también porque algunos usuarios usarán todo lo que digan en nuestra contra.
Para enfrentar el 2025, espero tener más tiempo para dedicarle al Fandom, lo cual no va a suceder, lo sé, ¡pero aún puedo tener esperanza! También espero que las comunidades internacionales y las wikis pequeñas logren sobrevivir otro año y se organicen en grupos pequeños o contribuyan a la Confederación para hacerlos más fuertes. ¡Realmente deseo comunidades más fuertes y dinámicas!
Espero que el año que viene también sea mejor. Este año nos ha dejado el gran mensaje de que la unión hace la fuerza, y tus deseos de bienestar para las wikis motivarán a muchos lectores, ¡estoy seguro(a)!

Deseo que las comunidades hispanas, lusófonas y eslavas sigan adelante con sus esfuerzos y con el fortalecimiento de sus comunidades, porque es una causa noble y grande, y lamentablemente estamos en un período en el que las comunidades solo se debilitan por la división y la falta de ayuda o de colaboradores apoyados. ¡Así que, todo mi amor y ánimo, chicos!

Hello everyone! It's Christmas! And as is tradition, we interview international colleagues to broaden our perspective regarding wikis. We really appreciate foreigners who are interested in Hispanic projects and that is why I present to you Etiolles, admin of TLOR Wiki in French and interwiki ally. Thank you very much Etiolles for accepting this interview, starting with the first question: How were your beginnings here at Fandom?
Hello! Very glad to be here and to be able to share some of my experience! I first started by participating to discussions in the French Lord of the Rings Wiki Discussions area. I was only using my phone and I got miraculously nominated thread moderator. I say miraculously because it was in September 2021 and my account was only a few months old and I didn't know anything about the Lord of The Rings or Fandom... It was very nice because all the people I met were (and still are) absolutely wonderful and kind!
An interesting start, so you went from chatting to editing, a process of the new generation of editors if I may say so. I imagine that during your time at Fandom you have met several people, who have inspired you? or from whom you have learned during your time in these places?
Well, let's say that I learned from plenty of people! I don't have a mentor like a most users I think but I take inspiration from everyone and every possibility. I am a very social person and I'm not afraid to talk to everybody. I've learned from the administrator of my home wiki, but also former IVT and IWR members, and volunteers from across the network, but also Staff members, such as Jpearson, I tried to work a lot with her and I learned a lot too. And working and discussing with Stars and international members, such as Taxcymus, made me learn a lot as well.
Aww, how nice that you mention me! I've learned a lot from you and formed a friendship with you, in the end, what unites us are the wikis but also being fans. Now moving on to another question that surely generates a lot of curiosity, where does your nickname "Etiolles" come from?
Indeed, being fans and passionate is very important and bring a lot of people together! To be very honest for that question, it is the name of my home town in France, in the south-east of Paris. I never knew what to choose for a nickname and around seven years ago, I used it for the first time and now I have this nickname everywhere, on every game and platform! So if you see a Étiolles or etiolles somewhere, well, it's probably me!
Cool! It's a very nice choice, now you're putting your city's name on high, not only will Paris be famous anymore, now everyone will go to visit Etiolles to meet you B) Continuing with the line of "Fandom" and "wikis" what is your opinion of the current situation of the international community? It's been a year since the withdrawal of the IWR, now that we can see the fruits of this decision, what have you concluded from this change?
I would say first that it's kind of hard to see the consequences, besides a feeling of abandon and a lack of maintenance and support for INT wikis. I think those are the consequences, from observation. But on second thoughts, I can't really blame Fandom Inc. for doing so because they have budgets to follow. I don't agree with the decisions but unfortunately, it's not up to me!
It would have been better if they told us before and helped us to get prepared but we learned about it the very day they dismissed the group, which I (and everybody else I'm sure) didn't appreciate.
From what I hear from my international colleagues is that INT communities have never been that inactive and abandoned. It's a shame and it requires a lot of time and energy to make a community active and dynamic, which I don't have. That's the main reason I try to support the Hispanic Confederation but also why I don't start a French Confederation.
There is no doubt that helping an entire linguistic block is a difficult commitment to make. I hope the INT community knows how to make these changes, and after a year of this incident, we can begin to give a more accurate opinion. On the other hand, since you mentioned the Hispanic Fandom Confederation, do you have any opinion of the organization? At least of these recent months after the withdrawal of the IWR.
I have a very good opinion of the Condeferation! I see it as an organization of involved users who don't want their community to die and it's very honorable. I unfortunately didn't have the chance yet to see how efficient it is for wikis or the global community but I'm sure it's helping administrators and users, and the community to stick together!
And a sign of its success is in my opinion the creation of a Slavic and Lusophone Confederation. I wish there could be a French, Italian or German Confederation to really strengthen more the INT communities and users!
In these times I also wish that communities in the future can reorganize and become user guilds, because at the end of the day, only by uniting can we form a common front, at least, allowing for more solid contact. In fact, I thank you for being the image of the Francophone community and for agreeing to act in a certain way as its unofficial representative. This also helps to know that the INT community is willing to engage in dialogue, even if only in part. On the other hand, let's change the subject a little, people want to know you better. What are your hobbies?
Good question, I have a lot of hobbies! One of my main hobby is reading, I love to read and learn about everything there is to know. I'm the kind of guy who will spend hours on Wikipedia reading random but so interesting articles. I also love geopolitics, history, geography, political sciences, languages, social sciences and much more! I'm not an expert at all in any of those subjects but I can talk a little bit and follow a discussion.
I also love theater and acting, tennis, hiking, archery and helping people. I don't know if you consider that as a hobby but I'm also a practicing Catholic (who loves to discuss about it and about other religions, we all have to learn more about each other)!
To quickly sum up, I can do a lot of everything and nothing, I'm an extrovert who is always thirsty of knowledge and new experiences!
Hey, that's great, I think that's why we get along. Besides, you're quite the enlightened man, which doesn't surprise me coming from a Frenchman, the cradle of the Enlightenment era in fact. Let's explore one of your hobbies: reading. It's no coincidence that you're an admin of the French TLOR Wiki, you edit wikis and you like to read. What literary pieces would you recommend to us or, failing that, what do you like most about TLOR?
To talk about the universe of Tolkien, I would greatly recommend the Silmarillion, kind of the "Bible" of the universe. It helped me a lot to understand the universe as a whole and the mythology as much as the history or characters.
Otherwise, I like lots of books such as Star Wars novels, that I devour during my summers, or, more classical, poetry and classical stories. I remember reading a great play written by Racine called Iphigénie. It's inspired by Greek mythology during the Trojan War and the way it's written (Classical Era, 17th century so you have the use of alexandrine and the rules of classical theater are strictly followed) makes the play even better and beautiful!!!
But what I mostly read is documentary books or specialized news paper and if there are fine amateurs of geopolitics, politics or diplomacy here, I would recommend you the Foreign Affairs Magazine, very interesting and professional magazine!
Recommendations that our audience will surely follow. Now that we are talking about literature, I imagine that at Christmas you expect to receive something special related to your passions, that is why I ask you: If you could ask Santa Claus for something (whatever) what would it be?
Huh, that's a very good question! I'm not of the kind who asks a lot of presents for Christmas, I usually don't know what to ask for and once it is passed, I remember I wanted that. What I want is totally unrelated to Fandom but I would like to get a camera. Because I travel a lot and I see a lot of beautiful things from all around the Earth and the only thing I have to capture them is my phone. I think they deserve more than that and I also always wanted to try photography!
Unrelated again but I would like to get a Stetson hat! Since I lived in the Missouri, US, for a year, I adopted the cowboy style with boots, jeans, belts, flannels and a straw hat. I need three things to complete my collection: a revolver (living in France, not gonna happen), a horse (I don't have enough time) and a winter felt hat! So I thought about getting a Stetson hat. They're quite expensive but it's worth it if I can keep it for the rest of my life!
So much to tell and narrate, how precious it is to have a camera to save moments and also, your gifts are representations of the moments you have lived. Looking back on this 2024, what are the lessons you have taken away from this year? And what do you hope to face next 2025?
From a Fandom point of view, I didn’t learn big lessons but I try to learn from every small lesson I can get. My Fandom life is pretty calm, I never enter in drama or controversies, and my home wiki has a very low number of editors so incidents never happened yet.
But now that I think about it, I heard some stories about other admins being demoted because of some conflicts or things they didn’t even do, so I learned from that to be very precautious and to weigh every decision or choice we make as administrators, it’s really important because it can have a negative impact on the community but also because some users will use everything they say against us.
To face 2025, I hope to have more time to spend on Fandom, which is not going to happen I know but I can still hope! I also hope that the INT communities and small wikis will manage to survive another year and organize themselves into small groups or contribute to the Confederation to make them stronger. I really wish for stronger and more dynamic communities!
I look forward to better things next year as well. This year has left us with the great message that unity is strength, and your wishes for the well-being of wikis will motivate many readers, I'm sure!

My pleasure! It's always a great pleasure to share experience and stories with other users. I find it easier to collaborate when you know better your collaborators!
I wish the Hispanic — and Lusophone and Slavic — communities to keep going on their efforts and on strengthening their communities, because it is a great and noble cause, and we are unfortunately in a period where the communities only get weaker by division and lack of help or supported contributors. Thus, all my love and courage guys!
